Since the beginning of this school year, the Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia (CMEM) has carried out 10 workshops with high school and university students on the topic of media self-regulation and preventing the spread of disinformation. As part of the project “Encouraging an Ethical Approach to Reporting Among Potential Young Journalists,” supported by the EU, dozens of high school and university students from the Faculty of Law at UKIM – Skopje, the University of South East Europe and the State University of Tetovo, and “Goce Delchev” University in Shtip took part. We thank the high school students and teachers from the “Josip Broz Tito” and “Zef Lush Marku” high schools in Skopje, the “Slavcho Stojmenski” high school and the “Kole Nehtenin” secondary school in Shtip, as well as the students and teachers from the “Kiril Pejčinović” high school in Tetovo.
These meetings, with dynamic and curious young people, were a valuable experience for CMEM and an opportunity to talk about how to choose a credible source of information, how to avoid propaganda and attempts to manipulate readers, how to recognize mistakes and breaches of the Code of Journalists of Macedonia in media content, and why it is important to prevent the spread of disinformation and hate speech.
Young people ask for many answers, many discussions, and the exchange of experiences about media self-regulation and the “rules of the game” for journalists and media outlets.
