Handbook on the use of Artificial Intelligence in journalism

The Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia is promoting a  Handbook for  Journalism Educators:  Reporting on Artificial Intelligence issued by UNESCO, and published in Macedonian and Albanian. This publication aims to guide journalism professors and trainers in assisting not only students but also reporters who are already working in journalism to properly address one of our time’s most pressing issues: the advancement of artificial intelligence, which affects the entire society.

The publication is supported by UNESCO as an activity of the regional project “Building trust in the media of Southeast Europe: supporting journalism as a common good.”.

This publication covers several aspects:

Understanding machine intelligence and identifying different types of AI

– Exploring the potentials of AI, its power and weaknesses

– Imagining different futures with AI by recognizing widespread popular narratives that inform public awareness

– Understanding the role of journalists in mediating and outlining AI discourse

– Finding ways to report AI in a precise, realistic and responsible way

– Linking existing journalistic genres, ranging from newsmaking to data-driven reporting

The Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia, in turn, provided this publication to help domestic journalists and media catch up with the development of technologies in the world, with their application in daily journalism, but also to face the dilemmas that arise with the development of AI.

“AI is used in journalism in a variety of ways, including assisting with story writing and identifying fake news. Although all this has its advantages, there is still room for concern.”

This handbook was published as part of a journalist training series funded by UNESCO’s International Communications Development Programme (ICDP). One of the organization’s primary goals is to improve journalist education as a unique intergovernmental program in the United Nations system that focuses on media development.
