How to ensure the long-term sustainability of Media Ethics Councils in the countries of the Western Balkans?

The business plan of the Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia (CMEM) foresees that in the future the organization will be supported with funds from domestic taxpayers, in an amount not exceeding half of the annual budget. In Montenegro, on the other hand, a legal solution has been found – funds to be secured through the Media Pluralism Fund, from which a certain percentage is allocated to self-regulatory bodies in the country. In some European Union countries, the Councils are supported through regular membership fees from member media outlets, from associations of journalists or editors, or through funds from the state budget. Representatives of the Media Ethics Councils from the Western Balkans discussed this topic at a regional meeting in Ohrid. The report was prepared by Miki Trajkovski, cameraman Marjan Shuminoski.
