In the light of the latest developments in the municipality of Butel , the Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia, reminds the media of the responsibility for careful, objective, accurate and reliable coverage for the public. The role of the media in times of tension is to soothe passion, to call for upholding of public order and peace, as well as for original broadcasting of information without speculation and selective view of events.

We remind the media of the obligation to monitor the public interest in informing and impartial dissemination of information on the developments, including their careful scrutiny. At the same time, we call on the media not to abuse the ethnicity of citizens and to be extremely careful in delivering statements containing hate speech and inciting dictionary that can upset the public and lead to new incidents.

An incomplete scrutiny of information and speculation, doesn’t represent only dramatic violation of professional standards, it can also lead to significant damage to the public and fair understanding of the issues and events.
